I’ve been thinking a lot about where to store my TIL posts lately. Where they are now, they feel awkward. They stand outside of any larger context, they are neither tagged nor searchable, they are ordered by creation date. But then again, I already have a place for those tiny bits of information that I have been neglecting lately: my wiki.
Might be about time to clean and update that.

It‘s a little quiet around here lately. I started a new job and am very focused on that right now. I will continue writing here in a few days or weeks, once I got used to everything.

I bought a case with a smart keyboard for my iPad today. Did not go with the original Apple one because I could not justify the price and got a Logitech Combo Touch instead. Pretty happy with it so far, typing this note on it. Rationale behind the purchase was giving me the ability to write comfortably without having to use my laptop every time. So far, I like the keyboard and I also like how iPadOS behaves with a keyboard and a touchpad.
Now, I only have a regular iPad, but I can now sense how people are talking about the iPad replacing their computer. We watched Room 1408 this evening, because Halloween. I hadn‘t watched it probably 10 years. Funny how the scariest part for me now is the whole story resolving around his daughter. Think I could not have cared less about that 10 years ago. Times have changed.
Also just learned that there are two endings to the movie and today we watched the ending I didn’t know. - 27th Oct, 2022-Permalink
I got married today. Don’t have much to say about it here, but in the spirit of more blogging, I wanted to at least have an entry on my marriage day.
We had a great day with the closest friends and family. Also, in related news, the URL of this site will soon change.

Got my new glasses today. My sight got worse (actually twice as bad since my last eye check), so it was awesome to see so much detail in the distance again. I got used to real life being like a video game where far away textures are blurred. Like, I was actually surprised how sharp things could be.
Started working on a new side project a few days ago to learn some technologies I will be needing in the future but have not worked with yet. It's just a Hacker News reader but its good for learning to not get distracted by needing to write custom backend logic.
May add an extra devlog for that in the future, since I like writing down what I did (especially after learning about the .plan files ID Software was using back in the 90s), but too tired right now. - 27th Sep, 2022-Permalink
It’s weird. Looking at my life objectively, it’s good. It’s just the „not normal“ life I always wanted to life. It is the kind of life I find inspiring when I learn about others that are living a kind of life like this. This sounds like it is daring and full of craziness. It is not. But I think I do many things different compared to the general society. And I like that.
However, living it day to day feels like a struggle and wrong. I don’t know why that is, because it should not.

I love how I added Netlify CMS in order to be able to write from my vacation but did not have the chance to do so once up until now.

Tomorrow (or rather today, looking at the time), my first vacation of the year will start, and it is very much needed.
I think I can count the number of days I have not written any code this year on two hands. While it’s been very rewarding in terms of improving my skills, it’s also very exhausting. In my vacation, I will not write any code. I want to focus on reading, writing (I have a few articles that are half done lying around) and photography. I’m sure I will not forget everything I learned over the course of the vacation, so taking a break will be okay.
Also, as a note to my future self: Taking your first vacation of the year in September is a stupid idea.

This morning, I was playing around with ways to add content to this site from my iPad. Since I own an iPad again, I want to take it on tips and would love to util it to write content here.
I’m currently in the process of rewriting this site, which will include adding a CMS, but I won’t be able to finish that until my next trip. So I looked at ways to manipulate git from my iPad (as this is a Jekyll site that is update from GitHub). There is Working Copy which looks great but requires the purchase of the pro version in order to push changes. For just my single usecase, I could not justify the price.
So I thought about adding Netlify CMS to the current site. This would make it possible to add content on the go easily and also already teach me something about Netlify CMS. Just finished adding it, took me about 30 Minutes in total, which is crayz. Now let’s hope this note actually turns up on the page.

I picked up an old hobby of mine that I did not have an serious interaction with in the last couple of years: photography.
I grabbed my old Nikon D3100 and took a lot of photos over the past few days. I'm very happy with them. I'm not sure what happened between the last time I picked the camera up and now, but I'm a lot more happy with how the photos turn out. Like, I have an image in my head of the situation and I'm not completely there of course, but the image that comes out of it is much closer to how I wanted it to be in contrast to a few years ago. (I've uploaded some of the pictures I took on unsplash)
Also, the The gap quote from Ira Glass comes to mind.I enjoyed it so much that I upgraded my camera to a Nikon D7000. Now, this is not exactly a new model, it was actually released right around the time my D3100 was released. But it's an upgrade nontheless. The Sensor feels a lot better, it has a few more Megapixels, an autofocus motor in the body, two SD Card slots and probably some more stuff I don't know about yet.
Took it out today and really liked it. Also orderd a battery grip for our upcoming trip with the camper van.
